Discovering Ada
Posted on March 22, 2022 by oyaamakisi
My maternal 3rd great-grandmother Ada has been my guidepost to understanding our family's history. Her stories shaped how I viewed Black women's journey of self-determination in this country. While others may focus their research on family members who made exceptional contributions to society, I wanted the full story of my Ancestors' experiences. My family never sugar-coated the painful aspects of our Ancestors' lives. I am a living, breathing testament to their resilience and triumph against a system determined to eliminate their humanity. How do I tell the truth about their stories and not limit their lives to suffering and pain? Ada rose from the ashes and redefined herself. I held those stories as a light through the darkness of the unknown.
